Kolasin is the town on the left bank of the river Tara, at an altitude of 960 meters and surrounded bz most beautiful landscapes. Kolasin’s history began in 1565 when from a Turkish military watchtower it started to develop into a town. It was liberated from the Ottoman rule in 1878. Kolasin is the centre of a municipality endowed with an exceptional geographical position in the central part of Montenegro. It covers an area of 897 km ² and has a population of 10000. The municipal territory is located between the Moraca canyon and the river Mrtvica to the south and the canyon of Tara to the north, at the juncture of two river basins flowing into the Adriatic and the Black Sea. The climate of Kolasin is diverse and it ranges between three types: the Mediterranean, moderate continental and Alpine. The average temperature in July is around 17 and -2 in January. Kolasin is a tourist resort which is worth visiting all year round but winters and summers are particularly attractive. The snow cover stores for 70 to 120 days in a year. Kolasin abounds in most attractive natural environment ranging from the rainforest of the National Park Biogradska Gora, Biogradsko and other lakes close by, a diverse flora and fauna, ski slopes, white water rafting, hunting and fishing, places for retreats and hiking, and plenty of other opportunities for relaxation and fun. The cultural-historic monuments of Kolasin are many but the one this place is so proud of is the Monastery Moraca (1252) which sarved a special mission through history as a political and cultural centre for its wider community. It is famous for its fresco painting, a valuable treasury and a library. Kolasin’s economy is based on mountain and recreational tourism. The hotel facilities available to tourists include Bjelasica and Cile. There is a number of attractive winter events taking place in Kolašin (entertainment, sports and culture) of which the most popular are „The Hot Winter in the Hills“, „The montenegro Cup Golden Fox“ and „The Montenegrin Ski Fest“.
